New drug for osteoarthritis

26th November 2009

A new osteoarthritis drug has become available at Chaseview Veterinary Clinic for animals that suffer from this chronic and painful condition. Trocoxil is manufactured by Pfizer Animal Health to reduce joint inflammation and pain, reduce the number of flare-ups and therefore slow the progression of this disease.

The new drug has a loading dose of a single tablet, (depending on weight) two weeks apart and then a single dose at monthly intervals. Daily tableting is not required as a single dose will offer continuous pain relief for one month.

Extensive studies have shown long-lasting results through the reduction of central pain sensitisation. If this is not managed adequately then the disease will progress causing joint instability, inactivity, muscle wastage and cartilage degradation.

In the cases managed so far, Trocoxil has shown some positive results. Please make an appointment with one of our veterinary surgeons to discuss your pet's condition and the possibility of trying this new medication.
