Pet advice at Christmas

23rd December 2009

We offer 24 hour emergency cover throughout the festive period so please do not hesitate to call us if you have a genuine concern regarding your pet.

Keeping your pet safe at Christmas

Please be aware that lots of food and drink consumed at Christmas can cause harm to your pet. Even basic turkey and vegetables can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain if eaten to excess! Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious harm to vital organs if care is not taken and theobromine contained within chocolate is toxic to dogs. Please call us if you notice that your dog starts vomiting, appears excitable or has tremors/seizures as chocolate poisoning can be fatal.

Other poisonous foods to consider include:

  • Grapes

  • Sultanas

  • Raisins

  • Onion/garlic

Plants to avoid:

  • Lillies (if the stamen is ingested, can result in kidney failure)

  • Poinsettia (mouth irritation and vomiting)

In the past we carried out major abdominal surgery on a dog that had eaten a novelty sock, resulting in bowel resection and intensive hospitalisation!! Please be aware that many Christmas tree decorations and present wrappings can be consumed by your pet, resulting in intestinal blockage and expensive surgery to repair the damage. Pine needles and shattered decorations can also cause problems if they penetrate the foot pad.

Close examination of your pet is essential!!
