We immensely proud to be able to offer our canine patients cutting edge regenerative medicine treatments. This is in addition to our already very successful Therapeutic Laser Therapy.
These treatments use the body's own tissues to kick start natures own tissue healing and repair mechanisms. To that end it is drug free and therefore side effect free. The main condition we will treat using these methods is osteoarthritis, one of the most common problems we see in dogs. Osteoarthritis can have a major impact on a dog's quality of life causing pain and reduction in ability to exercise. Management of this condition using regenerative medicine has revolutionised how well we can help these dogs enjoy a long, active, pain free life.
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)
Treatment using this involves taking a blood sample, 30-50ml from the dog. This blood is then processed in our laboratory to gather a platelet rich sample. The dog is given a light sedation to allow us to clip and aseptically prepare the joint for injection of PRP. Commonly a single injection is all that is required to see significant improvement in the joint. Occasionally a dog will require a second injection 2 weeks later if the joint disease is severe. The positive effects of this injection will last 4-6 months but can last up to 12 months. At this time treatment can be repeated.
Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cells are found in the body in fat and bone marrow. These cells can be harvested and used to inject into arthritic joints. Stem cells can differentiate into any cell type and also recruit other cells to help clean up damaged tissue. Stem cell therapy can be enhanced further by using PRP at the same time. We can anticipate benefits of this treatment to last 1-2 years
