🐾 Important Information for Clients: Tests Required for Imported Pets
If you're planning to import a pet to the UK or have recently done so, certain tests and health checks may be required to ensure your pet’s safety and compliance with UK regulations.
✅ Key Tests and Checks That May Be Required
- Rabies Serology (Titer Test)
- Required for pets from unlisted countries.
- Confirms a valid rabies vaccination has taken effect.
- Must be done at least 30 days after rabies vaccination and 3 months before entry into the UK (if from an unlisted country).
- Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs Only)
- Dogs entering the UK must receive a treatment against Echinococcus multilocularis.
- Must be administered by a vet 1 to 5 days before entry into the UK.
- Not required for pets travelling directly from certain countries (e.g., Ireland, Finland, Norway, Malta).
- General Health Check
- A full health check by an official vet before travel.
- Ensures the pet is fit for travel and complies with import requirements.
- Parasite Control
- Fleas, ticks, and internal parasites should be treated prior to travel.
- This may not be legally required but is strongly recommended for your pet’s and public health.
- FIV/FeLV Test (Cats)
- May be requested by UK quarantine or receiving shelters/rescues.
- Particularly important for cats imported from areas with a high prevalence.
