Winter aches and pains
30th November 2011
Now that the colder, damper weather is here, your pet may start to feel more aches and pains. Signs of joint pain include difficulties in getting up from a sitting or lying position, limping or stiffness, reluctance to go on walks, and repeated licking of the affected joints. The cold weather can make this pain and stiffness worse.
With the nights drawing in, it can be more difficult to find time to walk your dog. As a result, most animals will put on weight, which will put more strain on joints. Keep an eye on your pets’ weight and please get in touch if your pet is gaining weight. Not only will being overweight cause more strain on joints, but it can also cause other complications, like diabetes and heart disease.
If you are worried about your pet, it is advisable to make an appointment to see your vet as soon as possible.
If you have a pet that has already been diagnosed with arthritis, some of the following things may help:
-
warm, deep bedding
-
short, regular walks
-
joint supplements, like Nutraquin+ - ask one of our vets or nurses for information
-
Hydrotherapy - ask one of our vets or nurses for information
