Changes to Pets Passports!

25th January 2012

On the 1st of January 2012 the rules for bringing your pet dog, cat or ferret into the UK changed. It has now become easier to travel abroad with pets.

What you need to do if entering the UK from EU and listed non-EU Countries;

  • The first step to obtaining a pet passport is to have your animal microchipped. This is how your pet will be identified.
  • Once microchipped your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. There are no exemptions to this, even if your pet has a current rabies vaccination. Rabies boosters must be kept up to date. The waiting period before your pet passport is valid is now 21 days (previously 6months) after the completion of the primary vaccination. A waiting period is not required for subsequent entries to the UK so long as vaccinations are kept up to date.
  • Your pet will then be issued with an EU pet passport (providing your pet is currently living in an EU country).
  • (dogs only) Before entering the UK, all pet dogs must be treated for tapeworm. The treatment must be administered by a vet not less than 24hours not more than 120hours (1-5days) before scheduled arrival time in the UK.
  • And importantly you must arrange for your pet to travel on an authorised route.

There is no longer a mandatory requirement for tick treatment before leaving or entering the UK, however we strongly advise that you do.

Before travelling abroad with your pet we recommend you seek advice from one of our veterinary surgeons to find out what you can do to protect your pet from possible disease. Depending on which country you plan to visit your pet may be at risk of Babesia, Heartworm (Dirofilaria) or Leishmaniasis to name a few, if preventative measures are not in place. All of these are serious diseases that may be fatal to your pet and are not currently found in the UK.

If you are planning to take your pet to an unlisted non-EU country the passport requirements are different and you should seek advice from our veterinary surgeons.
