Heated Pool

Nellie in heated dog hyrdotherapy pool in ross-on-wye

We have a large, jet pool measuring 6.5' x 12.5' with a water depth of 4'. It is maintained at a temperature of between 28-32°C. It is critical that the water used for hydrotherapy is kept at the correct temperature because the warm water promotes blood flow to the muscles. This improves the oxygen supply and helps muscles relax allowing better movement. Swimming in cold water can actually be counter-productive as it reduces blood circulation. Cold muscles are more likely to stiffen up and cramp and be counterproductive to rehabilitation.

The pool has directional jets which can be used to provide additional resistance for the animal to swim against. The jet force can be adjusted from a gentle current to a white water rapid depending on the treatment your pet requires. Swimming itself is hard physical exercise and so in relatively short periods of time it improves cardiovascular fitness as well as helping musculosketetal problems.

During the swimming sessions the dog owners will get involved in helping encourage the dogs with praise and toys.

With all of our patients a hydrotherapist will assist the animal by being in the pool with them. All our owners can help from the side and stay dry so don't worry, you won't have to get in too.
